“Spaceman”;
The Killers; Day & Age; 2008
The Killers have has very mixed reviews from me. They have released 4 albums since they started, and after experiencing each one, I still cannot fully say if they are one of my favorite bands. I loved their first album, their second album was pretty rotten except for a few good songs, their third album (B-sides, covers, and rarities ironically) was better, and their fourth album comes up to the same standard as their first. “Spaceman” is on their fourth album.
The lyrics of the song spell a tale about someone who was abducted by aliens, getting their blood type taken and “a strange impression” in their head. When he finally goes back to his life, he looked forward to it, and yet hesitates at the same time. He still hears voices from time to time, and apparently gave a speech on the abduction, but “it wasn’t televised.”
There is no specific thing that makes this song special to me. It’s simply one of those songs that strikes my fancy. The singing is amazing, and Flowers, the main singer, makes the lyrics irresistibly catchy. The preppy, upbeat feel on the song makes me tap my feet whenever I hear it. The lyrics are completely off-the-wall compared to most music being about relationships.
One of the most memorable things about this song is the fact that The Killers played this song when I saw them in concert on January 28th, 2008. It was maybe the second or third time I had heard the song, but since hearing it in concerts automatically makes songs sound tenfold better, I made a promise to myself to listen to it more. It is amazing sound on the CD and in real life, and that’s why it’s one of my favorite songs.
