Requiem for a Dying Song”; Flogging Molly; Float; 2008

I first encountered Flogging Molly playing videogames (it’s surprising how often something like this happens).  Their song “Drunken Lullabies” was on the old PS2 game Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 and, along with many other songs on the game, I loved it.  I hadn’t been much a fan of Flogging Molly, only buying the album “Drunken Lullabies” was on, but when they came out with their fourth album Float, I searched for it and bought it.

Flogging Molly is a punk-like Irish band, with odd instruments including an accordion, a violin, and a banjo.  Just like Yellowcard, Less Than Jake, and the Killers, the unusualness of this band make them that much more appealing.  You don’t have an accordion in every band, and yet, Flogging Molly integrates it well into their style of music.

“Requiem for a Dying Song’s” lyrics contain memorable lines like “With you my love, with you my love / With you I will return / And requiem for a dying song” and “Talk, don't talk if you've nothing to say / Walk, don't walk if your feet don't know the way.”  The violin and the accordion give a smooth background to this song, and the bass in the background during the verses adds depth.  “Requiem for a Dying Song” is, in my opinion, one of Flogging Molly’s best songs.  They do very good punk, and they also do very good mellow songs.
